The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has successfully snatched the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a significant electoral upset. The NDC's candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu , emerged victorious over the NPP's **Mike Oquaye Jnr , securing 51,634 votes compared to Oquaye's  50,477 votes . This marks a notable shift in a constituency that has been a stronghold for the NPP since its creation in 2004, previously represented by Sarah Adwoa Safo, who held the seat until this election.

Election Context and Results

The election, held on December 7, 2024, was characterized by intense campaigning and some reported conflicts between party supporters. Despite these tensions, the results were clear: Akurugu's win reflects a growing discontent among voters in Dome Kwabenya towards the NPP, which has dominated the area for nearly two decades. The announcement of her victory led to celebrations among NDC supporters at the collation center, highlighting the emotional weight of the moment for both parties.

 Key Figures:
- Faustina Akurugu (NDC): 51,634 votes
- Mike Oquaye Jnr (NPP): 50,477 votes

This defeat is part of a broader trend observed in the 2024 parliamentary elections, where several high-profile NPP members have lost their seats to NDC candidates. The NPP's struggles in various constituencies signal a potential shift in Ghana's political landscape as voter sentiment appears to be leaning towards change after years of NPP governance. Analysts suggest that Akurugu's previous strong performance in the 2020 elections, where she garnered nearly 41% of the vote against Safo, may have laid the groundwork for her current success.

- The NDC has gained momentum in key constituencies.
- Voter dissatisfaction with long-term NPP representation may be influencing electoral outcomes.

The victory of Faustina Akurugu in Dome Kwabenya is emblematic of a changing political tide in Ghana. As the NDC capitalizes on this momentum, it will be crucial for the NPP to reassess its strategies and address voter concerns to regain support in future elections. The implications of this loss extend beyond just one constituency; they reflect a significant challenge for the ruling party as it navigates an evolving political landscape ahead of upcoming parliamentary sessions.
