Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has launched a scathing attack on former President John Mahama and the Attorney-General, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, over their recent decision to discontinue multiple court cases against former officials of the Mahama administration. In a Facebook post dated February 10, 2025, Azure described this move as a “dangerous precedent” that threatens accountability and undermines the fight against corruption in Ghana.

Azure's criticism centers on the government's abrupt cessation of legal actions against several high-profile figures, including former National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials like Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo and Dr. Opuni. He argues that this decision contradicts Mahama’s earlier commitments to governance reform and accountability, particularly in light of his administration's previous initiatives aimed at tackling corruption, such as the GYEEDA trials.

In his remarks, Azure accused Mahama of adopting the title "Chief Clearing Agent," previously used to describe President Akufo-Addo for exonerating officials accused of corruption. He asserted that Mahama's actions reflect a troubling pattern of political interference in judicial processes that could jeopardize future efforts to hold public officials accountable. "If you are charged, drag the case as long as you can, and if your party comes into office, the court process will be truncated," Azure warned, highlighting the implications of such a precedent for future administrations.

The Attorney-General’s office has faced scrutiny not only for dropping these cases but also for withdrawing appeals against previous acquittals. This has raised concerns among observers regarding the government's sincerity in its anti-corruption initiatives, particularly its Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) program. Azure emphasized that without genuine efforts to prosecute those accused of financial mismanagement, such initiatives would be rendered meaningless.

The ongoing debate over these developments has sparked widespread public discourse about the integrity of Ghana’s legal system and the political will to combat corruption effectively. As the Attorney-General prepares to address these issues in a forthcoming press conference, many are left questioning whether true accountability can be achieved under the current administration.
