John Dumelo, the renowned Ghanaian actor and entrepreneur, has made headlines by winning the parliamentary seat for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in the 2024 general elections. This victory is particularly significant as it marks the first time in 24 years that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured this constituency, which has traditionally been a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The elections were held on December 7, 2024, and Dumelo's triumph came after a hard-fought campaign against the incumbent Member of Parliament, Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the NPP. Dumelo's campaign strategy, which resonated with the youthful and diverse electorate of Ayawaso West Wuogon, proved effective. He garnered 40,561 votes, significantly outpacing Alhassan, who received **27,377 votes. An independent candidate, Abdul Rauf Abugri Mumuni, trailed with only 189 votes. The total valid votes cast amounted to 68,127, with  257 ballots rejected.

Dumelo's victory is particularly noteworthy given his previous attempts; he narrowly lost to Alhassan in the 2020 elections. This time around, his campaign focused on engaging the youth and addressing local issues, which seemed to resonate well with voters. He emphasized a message of change and accountability, stating in his victory speech that "the people of Ghana have been calling for change" and underscoring the importance of listening to constituents' needs.

His success at polling stations located on the University of Ghana campus highlighted strong support from students and young voters, a demographic that has increasingly become pivotal in Ghanaian politics.

The Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency was created in 1992 and has been a battleground between the NPP and NDC since its inception. Historically, the NPP has won this seat five times while the NDC has claimed it twice prior to Dumelo's recent win. This shift indicates a potential change in political dynamics within this affluent constituency in Accra.

Dumelo prepares to take office in January 2025, he has committed to working diligently for his constituents over the next four years. He expressed a desire to focus on development initiatives that address the needs of his community rather than merely relying on financial resources[2]. His victory is seen as a testament to evolving voter sentiments in Ghana and may signal broader implications for future elections.

Overall, John Dumelo's win is not just a personal achievement but also a reflection of changing political tides in Ghana, particularly among younger voters who are increasingly seeking representatives who align with their aspirations for change and development.
